Hard choices: Abel's Field

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few." Matthew 7:13-14

Life is all about choices. Right ones, poor ones, and ones that we have no idea why we made them. God made us as humans to have souls; He wanted us to have the ability to choose. To choose either Him, or not Him. To search for Him, or not to. To cry out to Him, or to remain silent. These are the choices that Seth and Abel have to face in "Abel's Field".

Left motherless by tragedy and abandoned by his father, high school senior Seth McArdle (Samuel Davis) faces enormous pressure as he strives to support his little sisters. At school, he endures the daily bullying of the football team. But fighting back only finds him singled out for punishment and assigned to an after-school work detail under the supervision of the reserved groundskeeper, Abel (Kevin Sorbo). Much to his surprise, Seth discovers that Abel may be the only one who truly understands his struggles. As dark times lure Seth toward desperate measures, the reluctant Abel may be the one person who can point him back toward the light.

My Conclusions:
About the film: The cinematography is excellent and professionally done. Soundtracks are noticeable and well placed. Acting was stupendous with even the younger members of the cast performing beyond my expectations. It did seem a little long due to some areas that could have been edited out but overall maintains your attention and keeps you wondering where the story will go next.

Mature concepts? There is no foul language used, but there are several scenes at a bar with drinking and men drunk. There is some constant friction between Seth and some of the football players and there are few fights. Seth and the other characters end up throwing punches which results in Seth walking around with a black eye/face most of the film.

Moral Value and Application? Very powerful lessons in how we all make choices in life and need to learn from them but not run away from our lives. Also how we all need to cry out to God whenever we are in need regardless of whether we think He hears us or not.

Overall: A very well done Christian film that ranks up there in my opinion with the "non-cheesy" and professional story drama.

Recommended? Yes. I would rate this film as family safe. Although for the younger children keep in mind what I covered in the mature content.
